What is the relationship between consumption and the environment?
Every aspects in the world has supply and demand, which is same in the environment too. Therefore consumption and the nature's purifying system has
to be in a state of equilibrium. Unless, the world can't manage the pollutants. ( Abe )
Consumption means buying and using of goods. Every product that we use in our daily lives and buy comes from our own environment. Resources used to make the products which are necessary to us are from the nature around us. Obviously, if there are more people trying to buy products (consumers), more products will be sold and more resources will be used up as well. Then, we are using up the environment by buying and using the goods. Considering these facts, I think the ‘consumption’ and the ‘environment’ are closely related to each other. As one increases other decreases, in other words, the more products we buy and use, the less environment will be left. Also, as one increases the other increases will also make sense, as more consumers buying goods, the more natural resources people are using. However, ‘consumption’ and ‘environment’ should be balanced. If too many resources are used for producing goods, then there won’t be enough of materials to produce the certain amount. Also, if there are too many consumers and there aren’t enough products, then it will cause great issues. Moreover, if there aren’t enough consumers but too many products, there will be huge problems in economy of that country. Therefore, I think that consumption and environment has close relationship and that relationship should be balanced to prevent any problems. (Ji Hyeon)
How are aboriginal people related to environmental problems and solutions?
" well aboriginal people are not helping our world instead they are making it worst and that is because if someone says, ' you arn't gonna help the world you are just one person' but that is wrong because if everybody says that then nobody will do anything so therefore they should stop stoping people and start encorraging". ( Alberto)
How are population and global ecology related?
"It's a problem if a specie is overpopulated; which i personally think human kind is. More people means more factories to build; more mouths to feed. Many animals extinct becuase their spaces are taken, illegaly huntings and food productions. Over population is a serious problem; just like what happens in China each parents can have only one child. Therefore we should pay more attention on our population because even a tiny amount of human population will have huge impacts on our world. Maybe you will ask "Isn't also important how people live?" Well, I don't think that destroying our planet will lead us a better life; if we want to live well on the planet, it is important to improve our environment first." (David)
If the population increases it will make lot of problems. For example, food, water shortage will happen and the world can be in chaos. ( Abe)
" well if the population increases then the economy want to get bigger to please the people and get more job opportunities so i believe there shouldnt be really big concentrated areas of people". ( Alberto)
I think like the relationship between the consumption and environment, the population and global ecology is also closely related to each other. The word ‘ecology’ means ‘the relationship between living things and their surroundings’. Global ecology may mean the relationship between the living things and their surroundings all around the world. I think the population is influenced by the global ecology or I can say global ecology is influenced by the population. The population over the world is increasing rapidly these days. As more people are using more products, the relationship between humans and the environment is getting unfriendly. Not for only a certain amount of people but for the whole world. Every one knows that the planet ‘Earth’ is going to be too small for all the people and that’s one of the reasons why people are trying to investigate other planets and look for the appropriate conditions in other planets. Since the space which people can live is limited, the increasing population is too much for the Earth to stand on. Therefore, I think the population and global ecology’s relationship is going to be some kind of an issue to talk about. (Ji Hyeon)
How do you feel about the state of the global environment?
I am hopeful but at times I get discouraged. One thing I do to get inspired is exploring nature, getting lost in the woods and enjoying the mountains. Another thing that makes me feel hopeful is reading all the wonderful ideas from my students!Well done! (Mr. Nordmeyer)
The state of the global environment is threatened. We(students) can save the world by announcing how the earth is threatened and polluted. (Abe)
I somehow feel bad about the condition of the global environment. For the past 100 years, people seemed to concentrate on improving technology for the comfortableness of people and for the benefits. People had not been thinking about the environment which they were using to produce products. If people, now, don’t try to prevent more serious problems, the future generations will get to suffer. Think about the grand children of peoples suffering because of their grandparents’ ignorance towards the global environment’s issues. I think everyone should start doing some little things to save our beautiful planet ‘Earth’ for the future generation. (Ji Hyeon)
"I feel pretty upset about the state of the global environment. It is obvious that OUR environment is in a serious situation, but most of the peolpe don't even care about it." (David) What are some specific things that individual people can do to help? What are some specific things that groups (NGOs, governments) are doing to help? " well a lot of schools are starting programs like roots and shoots and other school are also starting other ones. kids arounf the world are also making trips to go plant trees and things to make plants produce more oxygen. and NGO's are doing a lot of things but i have realized that the government doesnt really care that much about global warming or puts enough thought into it. and they are not realizing what is really happening". ( Alberto)
"The NGOs do lots of things to improve our environment. the most most common things the NGOs do are: giving speeches to the public and schools, they advocate people to help the environment and sometimes they write letters to the government asking for help like what Senator Garlord Nelson has done to President Kennedy before he found the Earth Day. Personally, I think the most effective way they do to get people involved is to design some special trips where they teach you how to preserve the environment and the using of renewable sources. People always have a better sense about the state of our environment. These are some contributions of NGOs to our world and most importantly, they bring hopes!" (David)
