W-APT stands for the WIDA-ACCESS Placement Test. It is an English language proficiency "screener" test given to incoming students who may be designated as English language learners. It assists educators with programmatic placement decisions such as identification and placement of ELLs. The W-APT is one component of WIDA's comprehensive assessment system.
We use a student’s WIDA level to talk about and decide the amount of EAL Support needed: EAL or EAL Plus
WIDA “level” is not necessarily the same thing as a W-APT score
To calculate the "WIDA level" we calculate the Speaking, Listening, Reading, and Writing scores using a weighting system (of 15% S/L and 35% R/W)
W-APT assessment tool is used by Admissions.
WIDA Model tool is used by the EAL Department for internal assessment.
The WIDA “level” is a compilation of test scores, teacher information, anecdotal observations, and is a holistic score based on the WIDA standards
The student’s level of EAL Support is determined by the WIDA level (example, 3.85, 4.15, 3.0) (see W-APT Support Level Cut Off Chart below)
Admission to SAS is based upon a combination of grade level and WIDA score explained on the following WIDA chart:
