Plastic shopping/grocery bags are cheap and easy to manufacture. They have resistance to water and are light in weight. These are mainly the reasons why 80% of stores today are using plastic bags over cloth or paper bags. Even though plastic bags have the above advantages, they do bring more disadvantages. Most of the impacts are done to the environment and animals in the sea. Firstly, plastic bags clutter landfills, clog roadside drains.
Secondly, plastic bags are made of petrochemicals, a non-renewable resource. As you all know, oil takes millions of years under high pressure soil to form. Price of oil has already gone up a lot since the 21st century; this is because the amount of oil in the world is getting lower and lower each day. Producing tons of plastic bags each day only makes the 'Oil Problem' worse. Statistics has shown that plastic bag consumption is between 5 billion and a trillion worldwide each year. However, only 1% of them are recycled.
Lastly, plastic bags are unsightly and represent a threat to wildlife if humans dispose/litter plastic bags improperly. This generally applies to marine animals like sea turtles. Sea turtles often mistake plastic bags that drift on high seas as jellyfish and die from eating them. Another possibility is that they get tangled in plastic bags and suffer from suffocation. Statistics has shown that more than a million birds and 100,000 marine animals die from these types of situation.
As you can see, the 'Plastic Bag' problem affects the life of not only humans but also animals. Don't be devastated though; there is a solution to this problem. Next time if you go shopping, bring your own bag instead of using the store's plastic bags. If everyone does the same, soon the plastic bag problem will dissolve.
Multiple-use shopping bags are often considered environmentally friendlier than single-use plastic bags.
