Task Forces - Burning Questions

Puxi ES (May 5, 2011)

  • Does the 25% rule still apply (no more than 25% of any grade level should be ESOL)? How strictly is it enforced, if it is enforced, as many grade levels are over this limit.
  • Puxi ES admin seems to believe that we are a "pull out model" program and that maybe we should change the program format? Is this true? Or is this merely a confusion caused by the naming of the services?
  • Shall we change the designations "Pull Out" and "Push In"? Pull out and push in seem outdated and lead to confusion.
  • Yes, I agree! We have been trying to get consensus for a couple of years- thanks for bringing this up again! Pull Out does not accurately describe what we do.
(Jon N) FYI there is more discussion on the PD ning here
  • Suggestions to use instead of "pull out" and "push in":
    • ISB Bangkok's term "English for Academic Purpose classes (EAP)"
    • "Language Block"
    • WAB Beijing: "In Class Language Support Program" (ICLS Program) = Push In; "English Language Enrichment Program" (ELE Program) = Pull Out
  • Other possibilities might include:
    • ELL Department - focusing on English Language Learners with a broader definition which includes 60-70% of our students as estimated by the previous ESOL Task Force
    • EAL = "English as an Additional Language" which includes both BICS and CALP (and since EAP tends to be used more in post-secondary contexts)
    • We should try to find a name for co-teaching which is more inclusive (e.g. supporting students in-class but also co-planning and co-teaching to support teachers and provide embedded professional development)

  • We took out the SAS vision statement since it was the old version; new version doesn't seem to have a part devoted to "support" that we can quote on our "Components" page.
  • We added the Admissions ESOL cut-off chart in the "Common Understandings" section, the version we linked is from 2006 but we assume it is still valid and in use by the Admissions Department.
