EXAMPLE:“O, Mickle is the powerful grace that lies In plants, herbs, stones, and their true qualities. For naught so vile that on the earth doth live But to the earth some special good doth give; Nor aught so good but, strained from that fair use, Revolts from true birth, stumbling on abuse. Virtue itself turns vice, being misapplied, And vice sometime by action dignified.” (Act II, Scene 2)
Explication: Friar Lawrence says this to himself. He is in the church herb garden, collecting plants to make medicine. It’s early morning, right after Romeo has left Juliet. In this quote, Friar Lawrence is explaining the qualities of plants, and how the goodness or badness of plants depends on how you use them.A plant can cure you if you use it a certain way, while the same plant can kill you, if you use it the wrong way. The quote is important because it shows how Friar Lawrence is skilled in making powerful drugs. This is also foreshadowing, because Friar Lawrence’s skill ends up being very important later on.

ABE YOON:
No, sir. I do not bite my thumb at you, sir, but I bite my thumb, sir. (Act 1, scene 1)
I am biting my thumb indeed but I'm not biting my thumb at you, sir.
Sampson (The house of Capulets) says this to the servants of the Montagues (Abram).
Before this, Sampson and Gregory were talking about how to punish the Montagues after they won the Montagues. And this makes an excuse for a fight and the Montagues and the Capulets fight. I like this quote because it shows Sampson's wit and cleverness and that makes the play humorous.
By giving liberty unto thine eyes. Examine other beauties. (Act 1, Scene 1)
To forget about Rosaline, you have to free your eyes to see other beautiful women.
Benvolio says this to Romeo who is loving Rosaline.
Benvolio tries to get Romeo happy but Romeo is too gloomy and depressed. So he gives a solution to seek other women but Romeo refuses the advice and he says he need to see a more beautiful women than Rosaline to erase her in his mind. Romeo judges women just by their appearance not the characteristics they have.
A man, young lady! Lady, such a man. As all the world. Why, he's a man of wax. (Act 1, Scene 3)
Paris is a man that is made of wax(his good appearance). There is no man better than Paris.
The Nurse says this to Juliet.
Capulet, juliet's father, is going to marry his daughter to a perfect man called Paris. And even the nurse says Paris is the best man in the world. However Juliet is not that much interested and she says she will follow the will of her parents, the Capulet and the Lady Capulet.
David:
Chorus:"A pair of star-cross'd lovers take their life."
(Prologue, 7)
The line describes Romeo and Juliet as a couple that love each other so much that they will never parted, even when they die it is their destiny to die together.
Romeo: "My name, dear saint, is hateful to myself/ Because it is an enemy to thee./ Had I it written, I would tear the word."
(Act 2, Scene 2)
Romeo says to Juliet that he hate his name so much becuase it is the name of her enemy; he promises if he has the word (Montague) written he will tear it.
Juliet: "What's in a name? That which we call a rose by any other name would smell as sweet" (Act 2, Scene 2 )
Juliet is comparing Romeo to a rose, she thinks that a name is unimportant; if Romeo is not a Montague he is still the same person she loves.
JI HYEON IM: "Ay me, sad hours seem long." (Act 1, Scene 1)
Romeo said this to himself. He is in love with Rosaline, but since she doesn't recognize Romeo's love and he is sad about it. When someone is sad or depressed, time seems to drag along. Basically, he is gloomy.
"Out of her favour where I am in love." (Act 1, Scene 1)
Rome said this to Benvoilo when they were talking about Rosaline and love of Romeo towards her. It means, Romeo is in love with Rosaline but Rosaline doesn't love Romeo, he is in one-sided love. He is again melancholy.
"Love is a smoke made with the fume of sighs being purg'd, a fire sparkling in lovers' eyes being vexed, a sea nourished with lovers' tears, what else is it? A madness most discreet a choking gall, and a preserving sweet." (Act 1, Scene 1)
Romeo said this to Benvolio. It means that if you get to love someone you will sometimes be sad, however, if the love is accepted you will be happy, but if not, you will cry and be sad. What else is it? Being mad about love keeps the madness inside and you will get loved. Romeo is very much in love with Rosaine.
HYUN WOO CHO
1"What drawn and talk of peace? I hate the word as I hate hell, all Montagues, and thee. Have at thee, coward!" (Act1, Scene1)
Tybalt said this to Benvolio. This quote show how Tybalt doesn't like peace and just like to fight and he said this after Benvolio asked for help to stop fighting then he said talking peace with sword out, so he doesn't trust him and join and fight with others. This quote describes characteristic of Tybalt.
2 "O Romeo, Romeo, where fore art thou Romeo? Deny thy father and refuse thy name, or, if thou wilt not, be but sworn my love, and I'll no longer be a Capulet"(Act2, Scene 2)
Juliet says to herself on the balcony before Romeo comes out from the bush. This quote means Romeo, Romeo why are you Romeo Deny your father and refuse your name or if you will not and still swear to love her than she will no longer be a Capulet. This shows how much she loves Romeo. This quote is very famous and maybe this is the most famous quote that Juliet says during the performance.
3 " Bya name I know not how to tell thee who I am. My name, dear saint, is hateful to myself because it is an enemy to thee. Had I it written, I would tear the word."(Act 2, Scene 2)
Romeo says this to Juliet saying he doesn't like his name because Romeo is enemy of Juliet so he will tear his name on the paper written when he see the paper. This quote is important because this is kind of similar to second quote I posted that he swears his love and he is ready to give up his name if it is needed.
WINNY WU:
1. "But soft, waht light through yonder window breaks? It is the East, and Juliet is the sun. Arise, fair sun, and kill the envious moon, Who is alreadyy sick and pale with grief."
Romeo talking
To himself, he's watching Juliet
Romeo said that Juliet is the sun (LOVE~~!)
2. "Tut, I have lost myself. I am not here. This is not Romeo. He's some other where."
Romeo
To Benvolio
Romeo is sad because he fall in love with Rosaline.
3. " O Romeo, Romeo, where fore art thou Romeo? Deny thy father and refuse thy name, or, if thou wilt not, be but sworn my love, and I'll no longer be a Capulet."
Juliet
To herslef
This tell us that Juliet love Romeo so much that she can give up her name
MIN JEE KIM
" Where shall we dine?-O me! what fray was here?Yet tell me not, for i have heard it all. Here's much to do with hate , but more with love. Why then, O brawling love, O loving hate, O anything of nothing first 'create!' O heavy lightness, serious vanity, Misshapen chaos of 'well-seeming' forms, Featehr of lead, bright somke, cold fire, sick health, Still-waking sleep that is not what it is!" (Act 1, Scene 1)
This is quotation is by Romeo speaking to his friend, Benvolio. This quotation occurs right after the fight between Capulets and Montagues. Romeo sees the fight, then compares love feeling (romance) and Violence(hate). Shakespere shows thin line between romance and violence through this quote. This quotation is basically saying that love can hurt one's feeling just as violence and they have same difference. This quotation is important because it shows part of the theme of the Rome and Juliet and there is also similar comparision in Act 4.
"This is the matter.-Nurse, give leave awhile. We must talk in secret.-Nurse, come back again. I have remembered me,thou's hear our counsel. THou knowest my daughter's of a pretty age."(Act 1, Scene 3)
Lady Capulet called Juliet to discuss about her marriage and ask nurse to leave. However, she call nurse back and ask about Juliet's age. This is quotation that Lady Capulet is asking nurse about Juliet's age. This quotation shows that Lady Capulet is not as close as Nurse to Juliet. Lady Capulet, who is the actual mother does not know how old her daughter is. However, Nurse who is not an actuall mother remembers everything about Juliet. This shows that Nurse is going to take big part in love affair between Romeo and Juliet instead of Lady Capulet.
"How, how, how, how? Chopped logic? What is this? "Proud." and "I thank you," and "I thank you not," And yet "not proud"? Mistress minion you, ...Or I will drag thee on a hrdle thither. Out, you green-sickness carrion! Out, you baggage! You tallow face!" (Act 3, Scene 5)
Capulet is angry because Juliet is refusing to marry to Paris. This is part of Capulet's speech which express Capulet's anger to Juliet. This is ironic because in Act 1, Capulet tells Paris that he has to earn Juliet's mind in order to marry to Juliet. He says that Juliet is his only a child that has left and is everything to him. However, in Act 3, Capulet suddnely changes his mind and go mad. This quotation also proves that 'hallow grief' occurs in Lady Capulet and Capulet in Act 4.
Claudia
Romeo
"I fear to early, for my mind misgives/ Some consequences yet hanging in the stars/Shall bitterly begin his fearful date/ With this night's revels, and expire the term/ Of a despised life closed in my breast/ By some wile forfeit of untimely death./ But he that hath the steerage of my course/ Direct my 'sail.' On, lusty gentlemen." (Act 1 Scence 4)
This is where Romeo continues talking about his dream and the consequences of it. He is afraid for what will happen at the end. He said that the party is where the fearful dream begins and that bad things will happen after the party. Romeo dreamt that because of him going to the party, bad things will happen. The only way to resolve or end it is by him giving up his life. This is a foreshadowing passage.
Friar Lawrence
" The sweetest honey/ Is loathsome in his own deliciousness/ And in the taste confounds the appetite./ Therefore love moderately. Long love doth so." (Act 2 Scence 6)
This is the scence where Romeo is telling Friar Lawrence to marry him and Juliet. Friar Lawrence agrees but says that even if the sweetest honey is really good, if you eat too much, its not good for you. Therefore, you should love moderately if you want it to last. He is contradicting himself because he is telling them that things should not go that fast, but then he is the one who agrees to marrying them that day.
Benvolio
"I pray thee, good Mercutio, let's retire./ The day is hot, the Capels 'are' abroad,/ And if we meet we shall not 'scape a brawl,/ For now, these hot days, is the mad blood stirring." (Act 3 Scence 1)
This is the scence after Tybalt sends a challenge to duel with Romeo. Benvolio and Mercutio are on the streets waiting for Romeo and Benvolio sees some Capulets. He tells Mercutio that they should go home because the day is hot and the Capulets are out. So if they see each other, they will definitely fight against each other since the hot and humid day is making people irritated. Benvolio is being his usual self, peaceful and mellow. He does not want to fight, especially with the Capulets because of what the prince said in Scence 1.
