Focus:
1. How has the temperature changed since the global warming has become a global problem?
2. What are the examples of the climate change?
3. What is the expectation of the future climate?
Summary: Ji Hyeon Im 9C ESOL Academic Literacy Summary for Part 1 “Climate system is made up of more than the atmosphere. Climate is affected by the oceans, ice sheets, land and all life, including humans” (Prince, 21). Also, climate is defined as “Long-term average of a region’s weather events lumped together” (U.S. EPA). Starting with the question “How is the climate changing due to the global warming?”, I began to research the significant changes of the climate such as temperature, weather and so on. As I expected, the change of the climate was a serious problem. Each year, the temperature is rising due to the large amount of carbon dioxide (CO2) released. However, during the research I found out that global warming not only increases the temperature but also decreases. Moreover, the changes of the climate are very unpredictable and sometimes harmful in a lot of ways to humans, plants and animals. Since 1970s the global warming became the biggest global issue and problem. Due to the substance called ‘aerosol’, which is suspended in the air, from volcanic eruptions, smokestacks of factories, power plants, and tailpipes of automobiles is the main ‘air pollutant’. Moreover, this ‘aerosol’ is warming in the Northern Hemisphere where 90% of the industrial activity on Earth is occurring. Not only aerosol but carbon dioxide is another air pollutant. “This gas has been building up in the atmosphere over the last 100 years as we burned fossil fuels” (Challenges, 1). The wall of carbon dioxide and aerosol are blocking the heat from the Sun to the Earth which needs to go back to the space. This causes the temperature to rise. Warmer Earth also means wetter world. Also, warmer world can mean world of weather extremes. The air pollution is closely related to the global warming. When air pollution is becoming serious, it means that more aerosol and carbon dioxide are released to the atmosphere, enlarging the global warming’s seriousness. From 1970s, until now the global warming is getting serious and this is becoming an inevitable disaster. The global temperature has rose 1F (0.6C) degree during 20th century. The temperature changes due to the global warming are bizarre. California was once as warm as Hawaii which California is considered as a cold country. Also, Sahara desert region is becoming drier while United States is becoming wetter. North America, Europe, Asia and Australia contain the highest rate of warming during 20th century. The temperature of these countries has rose between 0.8 and 1F degrees (0.5 and 0.6C degrees) from 1950 to 1999. According to these examples of temperature and climate change, it is obvious that the global warming is a serious issue threatening. Even today, the climate and temperature is changing in every part of the world. The future climate depends on the amount of the aerosol and carbon dioxide released to the atmosphere. According to the information from U.S. EPA internet site, the increase of Earth’s average temperature and influence precipitation, some storm patterns and increase of sea level are uncertain. These depend whether the greenhouse gases and aerosol concentration increases or decreases. Also, the responses of climate features to greenhouse gas and aerosol concentrations take a large part of deciding the climate patterns. However, if the global warming continues to get harmful, temperature may increase by up to 6.3F degrees (3.5C degrees) over the coming decades. Also, by 2050, Africa is set to suffer a 10% drop in rainfall, a 3F degrees (1.6C degrees) rise in temperature, 9 in (25cm) rise in sea levels. There will be a lot of disasters occurred in the future if the global warming is not going to stop. It must be stopped to save our only one Earth.

i really love your summary, it is well organized, nice structure and I can see that your efforts and that you researched a lot. Also, it is well summarized. You explained your questions in detail and easily which make readers easy to learn and enjoy reading the summary. I really liked that you used some data by studies because it makes the summary more realistic. Although my topic is also about global warming, i didn't really know about changes of temperature, expectations. I learned a lot about what scientists predicts in future by reading your summary. Good job! :)
Unwin, Mike. Planet Under Pressure Climate Change. 1. Chicago, Illinois: Heinemann Library, 2006. The action plan:
Goal-Based on your research from Part !, how do you want to have a positive impact on our environment?
As I had researched about the global warming, I want to have a positive impact on our environment of restricting the usage of materials which releases carbon dioxide and/or aerosol. The biggest reason why the global warming has started is the over usage of chemical materials. Since we cannot stop what has already begun we have to slow it down as much as possible. The destoried ozone layer cannot be fixed with our skills now. Therefore, we should be releasing much lower or none if possible carbon dioxide and/or aerosol to the atmosphere.
Strategies-What are some specific actions you will take to achieve this goal?
Turn off the air conditioner when possible.
Not using spray paints which I generally use for art classes.
Asking my father to walk to his work since it is really close to not to use cars a lot. (it's only about 10 mins of walk!)
Walking to places where I can.
Things everyone can do now.
Reducing the usuage of cars and use subways and bicycles and so on (this is really effective!)
Writing letters to persuade the government, companies, factories to reduce the amount of CO2 and/or aerosol.
Avoid buying household products such as wax (for hair or anything else), hair sprays and which contains bad chemicals.
Get involved in groups such as NGOs to prevent things by yourself!
Timeline-When will you do these things and how often?
When I am going shopping I will try to use subways or bicycles instead of riding a taxi, if the subway station is near.
If I get the chance to be able to send letters to government or be in part of the groups (NGOs) I will do the best I could possibly do.
As I don't use households such as hair sprays or anything else, I will keep try not to use them.
Resources - What will you need (if anything) to put these strategies into effect?
Optimistic perspective.
Faith that I can make a differnce.
Constantly reaching my goal, patience.
Results - How will you know when you've made a difference?
When I see my family doing the same thing as I do.
When I hear about the reduced amount of aerosol, CO2 released in the air.
When I hear group of people talking about the seriousness of the global warming and what they should do.
When I see the TV programs of people doing 'activities' to save our planet.
Analysis of ‘Be the Change Project’ Ji Hyeon Im 9C I chose to use Microsoft PowerPoint program or technology for this ‘Be the Change Project’, because it was the easiest program to access and use. By using PowerPoint, I was able to show the pictures to my audience and write about it in wherever I want to. Since I needed to talk about the climate change due to the Global Warming, I had to use lots of graphics to actually show to my classmates how serious it is. Furthermore, I can organize my information into different sections and manifest them through PowerPoint. Then, it would be easier than presenting in random order. The topic ‘Climate Change Due to the Global Warming’ is not an easy topic to research, organize and present. It requires lots of time, efforts and skills. Hence, if it is not structuralized, the audience will be confused by what I am struggling to tell them. However, the reasons why I used PowerPoint were not only to show the graphics, but to explain about them. If I was to only show the pictures, I should have made a story book like Alberto and David. Anyways, when I was using the PowerPoint, there were some parts which I couldn’t explain just by showing the images, such as, what aerosols are, what they do, and where they come from. Moreover, I cannot show the temperature change by pictures. The pictures, explanation, and the program or technology helped me to make an effective project. I was able to tell them how serious it is, why, consequences and what we should do. I feel proud of my presentation because I heard lots of compliments about the structures and the details of my presentation. However, I think I could get some more pictures of different places suffering from Global Warming. Also, I wanted to get lucid graphs showing the changes of average global surface temperature. However, I had to scan it but I didn’t have the scanner at home. It is a weak excuse, but I am still very proud of my work. Also, next time, I should practice more on speaking.
