2008-9 Pudong High School ESOL Snapshot

Support offered by ESOL teachers

ESOL Academic Literacy: Students need intensive English development. In this ESOL class - in place of foreign language- students develop reading, writing, speaking and listening skills to support academic language proficiency needed in their core classes.

ESOL flex: Students designated as Pull Out or Push In are scheduled to have flex with an ESOL teacher in the Writing Center .

In-class support and Co-teaching: ESOL teachers co-plan and co-teach with colleagues to adapt lessons/materials to meet the needs of English language learners. ESOL teachers also visit core classes to support students.

WritingCenter : This was the first year of the Writing Center and it is now “on the map” in Pudong HS. Although we make sure that our ESOL students get the extra support they need, we encourage all students from 9th-12th grade to come when they need to. A number of students come in regularly to seek assistance with their English essays, written work for social studies and college admission essays. Students may come:
o during their flex block (there are flex classes during each of the 8 blocks)
o during lunch
o after school
ESOL teachers offer the primary writing feedback/instruction but we did have one peer tutor and hope to recruit and train more next year.
