Identity is one of the very important elements in our lives that influences the way we think, the way we act, or just about anything that we do. Everyone experiences different things throughout life time and somehow these experiences 'renew' our identities to the one we feel more comfortable with. Our team summed up the three most significant factors that affect our identities after having a group discussion, and those are our experiences with education, our family and the environment (culture).
Education is one of most important factor that affect our identities. Different people that had different experiences with education result in different behavior and attitude; this is why parents often care about their kids' education very much. In most cases, students who attend international schools have more 'personal spaces' and freedom than students who attend local schools. For this reason, international students are more open and creative whereas local students are always hiding in their shells.
We all born to a family that is willing to instruct us how to get an 'impressive identity'. Every family has different beliefs, opinions and views toward things. Parents tend to teach their kids what is right and what is wrong, and the kids follow the rule of their own parent's; therefore everyone has different identites. It is all the experiences we get from our family through all the years that affect our identities. Comparing an American family with a Chinese family, the American family would definitely be more fun and outgoing. On the other hand, the Chinese family would be more strict and tense.
The environment we live with certainly also makes a difference to us, and that goes back to the whole idea of identity again. In an environment, there are so many things to consider of that change ourselves but culture is the only major one. Culture, however, does not seem like a big word sometimes but a lot of things are involved with it. For example: food, dress, language et cetera. When we travel, we experience new cultures; when we go to an international school, we learn to cope with different cultures; and when we meet friends from different countries, we notice fascinating things about their cultures and try to be like them. Moving abroad can also be a valuable experience for us to know more about that particular environment, that particular culture. Culture affects our identities.
To conclude, our identities are important to us. Identity represents who we are. Family, environment (culture) and eductional experiences affect our identity. Each person has a unique identity and don't you see how that is amazing?
