EAL students are given the WIDA Model Screener assessment upon admission to the school. The WIDA Model Screener measures a students' overall academic English proficiency level, and places students on a 1-6 point scale. Students at a Level 1 proficiency are at a very beginner level, while students at a Level 6 are reaching native English language proficiency.
The flow chart below shows each step in the SAS Admissions process. Based on a student's Composite Proficiency Level (CPL), he/she will receive EAL Pull Out support, EAL Push In support, or be monitored for a short time to determine if any additional support is needed. The chart below shows the suggested EAL support level based on a student's determined academic language level.
Admitted students requiring EAL support (either push-in or pull-out) as determined by a WIDA screener during the application process are billed RMB 10,000. Those who are on the cusp of not needing support are labeled ‘EAL Monitor’ and are NOT billed the fee. Some overseas applicants are admitted first, flagged as “Test on Arrival” if suspected EAL, and then tested when they arrive in Shanghai. They are billed the EAL fee upfront as it is harder to collect after the fact.
Divisions have up to six weeks from the start of school to evaluate whether the EAL level determined by Admission holds true. Changes could occur due to the period between assessment and enrollment or the division determines a different level is more appropriate. At that point various steps need to be taken so parents can receive their refund, if applicable, or be charged the EAL fee:
Situation 1:
New student starts school with EAL Support status (push-in or pull-out) and EAL teacher changes this status to Monitor.
